Located just 45 miles north of San Francisco, Sonoma Valley is the birthplace of California's famous wine industry. Also known as “Valley of the Moon”, Sonoma Valley is home to more than 300 wineries producing unique wines true to it's terroir.
History of Valley:
The first vineyards were planted in 1823 by Franciscan monks at the northernmost Mission San Francisco Solano, which was the only mission built in Alta California after Mexico gained independence from Spain. Count Agoston Haraszthy, known as the father of California viticulture is credited with the introduction of the Zinfandel grape varietal. It wasn't until the 1970's & 80's when the modern wine industry in Sonoma Valley started to pick up, and expand rapidly in following decades. The Sonoma Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA), was established in 1981 and is truly unique in that the Sonoma Mountains to the west protect the valley from excessive rainfall. This makes for concentrated fruit that is so important in winemaking.
History of Square:
The distinguished and quaint Sonoma Square is approximately eight acres in size and was laid out in the standard form of a Mexican town. The many historical buildings that surround the square are: Mission San Francisco Solano, Blue Wing Inn, Sebastiani Theatre, Toscano Hotel, and many more. The plaza is a Historic Landmark and hosts many festivals and the ever so popular Farmer's Market, held every Tuesday evening from April to October.
Today, the Sonoma square boasts more than twenty tasting rooms from wineries all over Sonoma County. Our webcam captures the many tourists visiting and sipping these wines year round.
